How to Reduce Humidity in Your Home

We all know Georgia gets extremely humid during the summer! Not only are these elevated humidity levels uncomfortable, but they can also negatively affect your health and home. The increased moisture in the air can weaken the structure of your home, lead to peeling wallpaper, and contribute to mold growth.

When indoors, humidity levels above 60% are considered to be high. Maintaining a humidity level between 30-50% is recommended for both your comfort and well-being. A tool known as a hygrometer can be used to check the humidity level inside your home. Continue reading for some advice on reducing humidity inside!

Purchase a Dehumidifier

Dehumidifiers reduce excess moisture in the air, making it easier to breathe. They also reduce dust and other pollutants, which will be beneficial to your family’s health. Many now have the technology to monitor humidity levels and can be programmed to remain at the level of your choice!

Leave the Air Conditioner On

Air conditioners are also useful for removing moisture from the air. Turning on your AC will naturally reduce indoor humidity and circulate drier air throughout your home. Change your air filters frequently for the best results.

Air Dry Clothes Outside

If you often air dry clothes inside your home, this may be contributing to your humidity issues. When the water from the clothes evaporates into the air, the humidity levels inside your home will rise. Drying wet items such as swimsuits, towels, etc. outside will help prevent this increased humidity.

Use Your Exhaust/Ventilation Fans

Using the ventilation fans inside your kitchen or bathroom can be extremely helpful in decreasing humidity. When you’re cooking on the stove or taking a hot shower, make sure these fans are turned on. It can also be helpful to leave the fans running for a little while after you have finished these activities to further eliminate the excess moisture.

Implementing a few, or even all, of these tips into your life will help decrease the humidity levels in your home! Stay safe and enjoy the rest of summer!
